An Anniversary Bouquet

May each of us living buds bloom as soft and full and fragrant as our parents did...each soul perfuming the air with love and kindness o'er the one brief night each fragile flower is given......

Those who love us never leave us...here is how we find them....

  1. Lovely, and I actually recognize the flowers: Epiphyllum oxipetalum. Someone gave Lee a couple of leaf cuttings five or six years ago, which we potted. They've grown slowly since then, but about a month ago we noticed that there were three buds forming. The buds slowly filled out, and when Lee left for southern Maine at the beginning of last week, it was looking like blossom time was soon. I took pictures every day as the buds swelled, and, since I knew that they only bloom for one night, kept telling the plant to wait for papa. Last Saturday night we met in Bangor to go to a Bob Dylan concert (any tiny bit of melody his voice ever had is totally gone, but that's another story) and when we got home I went up to check and all three buds had opened. 6-7" white blossoms with an incredibly intricate pistil and stamen leading down to a huge throat and the most gorgeous scent. It was truly amazing that they did indeed wait for Lee, who had been nursing and encouraging the plant. Apparently in Victorian times, people had parties to watch them open. Anyway, maybe it all says that Mom and Dad are indeed waiting for those who hold that belief. Thanks, Poodie.
