The Last of the First for Dad

Well, today and tomorrow mark the last of the first anniversaries of Dad's death. One year ago today was Dad's funeral Mass and one year ago tomorrow was his very memorable inurnment. While the details of the Mass will likely fade with time, I don't think I will ever forget that day at Lakeview Cemetery. Cap'n Lee had to dig our car out of our driveway after we got stuck. We crept through snowy deserted streets to Lakeview. Mostly, I remember the peacefulness and the quiet of the snowfall. It was a beautiful day. I think Dad would have loved it. So fitting for him!

  2. Oops! Deleted my own comment...here it goes again!

I also remember that day very well. I so badly wanted to be there with you all to say good-bye to Papa in that serenely beautiful snowfall. I knew, however, that my place was with Mom, and I had the honor of sharing the rosary with her for Pops. I am fortunate that as an artist, my visual senses are good enough to allow me to see that day and that place in my mind, even though I was not there in person...so I just imagine that I was...and in spirit, truly, I was.

  3. And yes, Dad WOULD have loved it. I remember how he would run in that kind of weather, enjoying the solitude and the peace. How did that loner survive six kids! He would also have been happy to know that Gesu had to dig out the extra chairs for him! Panis Angelicus, Papa, enjoy that heavenly bread!

  4. And I remember wishing that we had brought snow shovels to Lakeview with us so that we could do a crossed snow shovel salute. I don't know if he really enjoyed shoveling snow (though Miz E must have gotten it from somewhere) but he sure did have it down. It WAS incredibly peaceful that day, and he was enjoying it through us. As for his running in wintery weather, I remember the snot-sicles and how gross we thought they were.

  5. Yes, the crossed snow shovel salute would have been so very appropriate. He sure held out for the manual snow removal method! I think it was the extra aerobic benefits!
